Our Best Night Skincare Routine

At night, your skin goes into recovery mode. Maximise your skin's R&R with our guide to the best night skincare routine for every skin type.

Did you know beauty sleep is a real thing? After spending all day defending against daily aggressors and dehydrators, at night, your skin's cell renewal accelerates to help counteract any damage from the day.

‘Essentially, the more sleep you get, the better it is for your skin. We see this with lack of sleep leading to dehydrated skin, breakouts and open pores,’ explains Dr. Angela Tewari, a London-based consultant dermatologist. ‘What happens overnight is the replenishment and rejuvenation of your skin barrier. You also tend to see increased molecules that absorb water in the skin, so your humectants, urea and other important proteins are able to migrate up and sit in the right levels of the skin.’ During this time, your skin also becomes more sensitive and blood flow increases, while it undergoes a natural detoxification process to help maintain skin clarity and health. This is why it's so important to pay attention to your evening skincare routine, choosing night skincare products that will help support these natural processes, giving your beauty sleep the boost it deserves. Here, Dr. Angela Tewari answers some frequently asked questions about night-time skincare.

What’s the most important step of a night-time skincare routine?

Every step in your evening skincare routine is important, as together they help optimise your skin's nightly renewal and regeneration. The most important step really depends on your main skin concern. ‘If your skin is more dehydrated, then I would go for a replenishing product with retinol and hyaluronic acid. If you're looking at more acne-prone skin, you want something to reduce the surface bacteria, targeting this with a salicylic acid-based product to address that bacterial component,’ explains Dr. Tewari. ‘If we're thinking about rosacea or redness, you need to keep the skin cool and create a barrier on the skin to protect against surface pollutants.’

What night-time routine do dermatologists recommend?

Consultant dermatologist Dr. Tewari suggests taking a holistic approach to improve your overall sleep hygiene, which will positively impact skin health. ‘Think about your evening routine as a way of calming down the brain and minimising any activity that can harm sleep, reducing the amount of adrenaline production in the body,’ says Dr. Tewari. ‘I would say a good night skincare routine is an important part of that. I personally like a very hydrating mask as my skin feels super enriched, and I feel like my skin is really working overnight.’ A great option is our new Smart Clinical Repair™ Overnight Recovery Cream + Mask. Formulated with adenosine to calm irritation, 12% hyaluronic acid to plump the look of fine, dry lines, and peptides to reduce the look of lines and wrinkles, it delivers deep, rich hydration while you sleep, and can be used as either a night cream or mask.

What ingredients are best for skin at night?

Again, this really depends on your skin type (read our Skin Type Guide if you are unsure). ‘With ageing, drier skin, I recommend a retinoid with a hydrating ageing, whether that's an oil-based formula or a softer, more lightweight product like a hyaluronic acid-based serum’, suggests Dr. Angela Tewari. If you're experiencing oily skin, breakouts or are noticing a lack of radiance, salicylic acid is also a great ingredient to incorporate into your evening skincare routine.

Just as a good night’s sleep does wonders for mind and body, a quick five-minute night-time skincare routine is enough to visibly improve your skin. With this effective regimen, you’ll wake up to dreamy soft, glowing skin, every day.

The best night-time skincare routine + best night skincare products:

Step 1: Start with clean skin.

Never go to bed with your makeup on; any trace of makeup or dirt left on skin overnight can clog pores and lead to blemishes. It also makes it harder for your skincare to sink in, reducing the efficacy of your next skincare steps. A gentle yet thorough cleanse allows skin to breathe and recover from daily stressors, so always start your evening skincare routine with a great makeup remover like Take The Day Off™ Cleansing Balm, a silky balm that sweeps away dirt, makeup and impurities. Formulated with a blend of natural ingredients, including safflower seed oil which works efficiently to help break up natural oil found on skin, the solid balm transforms into a nourishing cleansing oil as you massage it into your skin. Rinse well with warm water, then gently pat dry with a clean cleansing cloth or facial towel. We recommend a gentle double cleanse at night for the ultimate clean. The general rule is to use a water-based cleanser after an oil-based formulas, and we have plenty of options tailored to every skin type (learn more about double cleansing). There’s a version of our fan-favourite Liquid Facial Soap cleanser that will work for sensitive, dry, oily and combination skin types, or if you’re particularly prone to breakouts our blemish-control cleanser is a no-brainer. It's a fine balance, though, as over-cleansing can strip the skin and damage your skin barrier. ‘Be very gentle with your second cleanse and almost pat it off, then follow with a hydrating moisturiser or mist to lock that back in,’ suggests Dr. Tewari.

Step 2: Introduce a gentle exfoliator.

Incorporating a gentle liquid exfoliator into your night skincare routine can make all the difference to your glow. Our dermatologist-developed Clarifying Lotion with acetyl glucosamine and witch hazel sweeps away pollution and dulling flakes to reveal fresher, clearer-looking skin. The result? Skin is perfectly primed for next skincare steps and looks radiant when you wake up. The most popular Type 2 formula is best for dry/combination skin, but there is a Clarifying Lotion formula for every skin type, including a super gentle formula for sensitive skin and a targeted anti-blemish formula.

Step 3: Apply your targeted serum.

Our advanced serums are concentrated with powerful active ingredients to provide a potent dose of benefits to your skin, which is why they are the ideal addition to any night-time skincare routine. One of our most popular serums, the Clinique Smart Clinical Repair™ Wrinkle Correcting Serum, is formulated with a potent 1% retinoid and a 9.5% peptide blend to help reduce the look of wrinkles, leaving skin looking firmer, smoother and more radiant. This dermatologist-developed and dermatologist-tested formula is our most advanced wrinkle-targeting formula yet, and is suitable for use twice daily. It's particularly beneficial at night as the retinoid works to support skin's natural renewal process, accelerating surface cell turnover to smooth the look of skin, while peptides help to strengthen skin and hyaluronic acid hydrates and instantly minimises the look of fine, dry lines.

Step 4: Bring in the moisture.

Hydration is the penultimate night-time skincare step – and it's not one to skip. Your nightly moisturiser can absorb deeply into skin undisturbed, without being interrupted by daily wear (think makeup, changeable weather, touching your face, etc.) Turnaround™ Overnight Revitalizing Moisturizer works hard to rejuvenate skin while you sleep. Formulated with salicylic acid to target dullness and restore radiance, this dermatologist-tested night cream visibly plumps, hydrates and smooths fine dry lines for a fresh-faced glow when you wake. It's suitable for all skin types, too.
As a luxurious treat, double down on the hydration with our Moisture Surge™ Overnight Mask, an intensely creamy, soothing formula with activated aloe vera water and murumuru butter. Apply a light layer as the final step in your routine to nourish skin as you sleep. After all, nothing says ‘I got my full eight hours’ like waking up with plump, dewy skin. Another great way to turn your night-time skincare routine into self-care is to introduce some facial massage techniques. Read our guide to facial massage for an easy DIY massage routine you can incorporate into your evening skincare routine.

Step 5: Finish with eye cream.

Don't underestimate the power of a great eye cream. The skin around our eyes is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of our face, therefore it requires a more delicate approach. We have a few options, but if you're targeting lines and wrinkles around the eye area, which can be one of the first places to show signs of ageing, we highly recommend Smart Clinical Repair™ Wrinkle Correcting Eye Cream. This nourishing eye cream was specifically formulated to strengthen the skin in the eye area more effectively. It contains a powerful blend of peptides that are engineered to fight the look of wrinkles by boosting natural collagen and supporting the skin’s natural support structure. Other key ingredients include caffeine and algae extract, which help to soothe and calm the skin for optimal repair. In addition to its wrinkle-fighting properties, it's also formulated with mango seed and shea butter to hydrate and restore suppleness to the skin around the eyes. If you're looking to target dark under-eye circles or eye bags (more on this in our guide to reducing under-eye bags), we think you'll love our bestselling All About Eyes™ eye cream. Formulated with powerhouse ingredients including vitamin C and caffeine, this lightweight, cooling cream-gel hydrates and refreshes to reduce the look of puffiness and dark circles.

Following these five simple steps nightly will help your skin to rejuvenate and regenerate during sleep. Always use products appropriate for your skin type, and pay attention to your skin’s needs, adjusting your routine as necessary. You may wish to add a richer moisturiser or an overnight mask in the winter months (read all about winter skincare) or perhaps introduce a blemish treatment if you're seeing breakouts.
